Race Report – BETI BIKE BASH

The Beti BikeBash presented by Stan’s No Tubes and hosted by Yeti Beti took place in Lakewood, CO June 1-2, 2013. It is such a unique race just for all the women out there!! NO BOYS allowed, well they could support us, but no racing for them! It offers something for everyone. Supporting professional mountain bikers with a HUGE purse, to a never ever category for the first timers, to a camp for little bellas10 and under to help improve their skills and have fun. Riding with some of the top professionals in the country…. here is a glimpse of how the pro/open race went for me:

At 10:45am we take off. Erin Huck quickly took the hole shot with a slight lead and me in 2nd…. ME… 2nd into the first single track. I started to almost panic, thinking that I was NOT in the right position with Olympic and World Cup stars behind me. I knew soon enough they would get around me, I calmed down. We quickly entered the first double track. Teal Stetson-Lee, Rebecca Gross and I started to battle to hold our positions as we reeled Erin back into the field. There was a sharp right turn and that’s when Gould passed me, as well as other fast gals in the nation. This was a relief for me, actually. Georgia and Teal put the hammer down and gained a gap in the 1st lap.

Coming into the 2nd lap, I was in the chasing group with Erin Huck, Rebecca Gross, Judy Freeman and Heather Irmiger. I felt strong and really couldn’t believe I was on these girl’s wheels. It was a surreal feeling. Mid way through, Erin bridged the gap and caught onto the wheels of the Luna team. No one else responded. Heather and Judy kept a pace that I was able to hold onto through the 2nd lap….  barely.

Laps 3/4/5 Judy and Heather took turns pulling. I couldn’t help pull. I wanted to, but I was just hanging on for dear life! Some thoughts going on in my head:

OMG…this is crazy
EAT
DRINK
Please don’t flat
I’m in 6th place…holy s***
Focus…the race isn’t over yet

In the end…I was able to keep it together and placed 6th, a sprint finish for 4/5/6, I was just seconds behind girls I read about! Very exciting and motivating!! Every time we crossed the start/finish line, the announcer Larry Grossman would scream how I was having a strong race…and he was right! Top of the books for me so far.

Have to put a shout out to my BF, Jon Brown for the support and feed! To all my family and friends. Huge thank you to ALL the sponsors  – Grigss Orthopedics – GO, Pearl Izumi, Stan’s No Tubes, Rudy Project, SRAM, Go To Guide Telephone Directories, Rock N’ Roll Sports, Acli-mate, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, Pike Builders Inc., Elk Mountain Resort, Squirt, The Alpineer, Chucks Glass and High Mountain Concepts LLC. We couldn’t do this without any of you! To my coach Alison Dunlap. The Yeti Beti Squad/volunteers!

…oh, I also went to Chipotle and ate a burrito after the awards (this is worth mentioning).  A girl from a small town of Gunnison, the big city has its perks.  It was a great day!
