Hometown: Gunnison, CO,

Age 37
I am a NY native.  I moved to Gunnison in 1994 to attend Western State College.  Initially I was a distance runner for Western in cross-country but found cycling to be less injurious.  I raced 4 seasons as an expert MTB rider starting in 1995, then moved on to semi-pro in 2000 and pro/elite by 2001.  In 2005 I was 5th at the NORBA national finals in Durango. In 2004 I started entering XTERRA triathlon races (olympic distance off-road).  I placed 3rd at the World Championships in 2007 and was XTERRA Winter World Champion in 2008/2009.  In 2007, I found winter triathlon to be my calling, winning 2 national championships and being named to 5 World Championship teams by 2011.  I found another late calling in 2010 with ski mountaineer racing or randonee.  I have since joined Team Crested Butte and compete in the COSMIC series events in Colorado.  I am a 3X Champion of the Grand Traverse as well as a 2X Ultimate mountain challenge Champion at the 2012/13 Vail Winter Games.

Pre-race/Post-race foods: I like steel cut oats especially McCann’s Irish oats. I add peanut butter, raisins, honey and banana. Great long term energy with no stomach issues.  When I have a good result I like to treat myself to a nice medium-rare burger and a top shelf micro-brew.  There’s no better way to cap off a good day!

Bike of Choice: I have been a full suspension rider for many years and have adopted a riding style to riding rear suspension.  That being said, I have really enjoyed the 29er hardtail platform.  The last two seasons I had some good success aboard the Breezer Cloud 9 carbon 29er hardtail.  For 2013 I am going back to full suspension with 29 wheels.  I will be riding a custom Specialized S-Works Epic 29er with SRAM XX1 and Stan’s No-Tubes Wheels with Maxxis rubber.

Race of Choice: Full Growler, 64 miles of high desert single track in my backyard!

Favorite Doctor: Griggs of course!  Wait a minute, was that a trick question?

Favorite Mexican Dish:  Smothered Chimichanga with fishbowl margarita/salt!

What has cycling meant to me?:  Cycling has become a passion for exploration and adventure for me.  It is a sense of freedom and purpose that is sustainable and extremely rewarding.  My wife and I have both been runners who turned to cycling due to injury and have not looked back since!

What can I do?:  I like to hang out after events and talk with other riders.  I enjoying giving advice, clinics, leading group rides and even loaning my bike out for a test ride.  I like to be able to share my love for cycling with others so the sport may complete others as it has myself.

Dr. Griggs has taught me:  My pectoral-is muscle is not indestructible   I need to be patient and smart with racing as a veteran.

Dave Weins is one of my favorite role models.  He has produced amazing results as an athlete on the mountain bike, raises 3 boys and is the driving force of Gunnison Trails.  Dave has given back so much to the cycling community here in the Gunnison Valley.  I am in awe of his energy and passion for cycling.
